Apple announces new MacBook Air with M2 chip, 13.6″ display, and magnetic charging

The company's most popular notebook gets a new design and enhanced performance

Mac is a critical element of many businesses' best work.

Many companies admit that switching from PC to Mac transformed productivity, IT, and security.

Zhu Jiwen (Chief Financial Officer, Want Want Group) says, “Mac is one of the best investment decisions we have made. Mac enhanced Want Want’s security infrastructure, lightened IT’s workload, and gave our employees tools that boost their productivity.”

The new, completely redesigned MacBook Air was unveiled by Apple at the recent Worldwide Developers Conference. Such significant renovation of Apple's most popular laptop has not happened since 2018, and now in the design of the new MacBook Air, we can see references to both the latest line of Apple iMacs and the new MacBook Pro, introduced at the end of 2021.

The most important novelty is the use of a new M2 system-on-a-chip - the second-generation Apple Silicon processor.

The body of the new MacBook Air has changed: the Cupertino team decided to bring the line of manufactured laptops to a single form and for the first time abandoned the famous wedge-shaped case. Now the laptop has a body of the same thickness without narrowing to the front.

The dimensions of the one-piece Unibody aluminum case are 21% smaller than the previous model. The thickness of a 13-inch laptop is 11.3 mm (1/2 inch) and it weighs 1.24 kg (2.7 lb). The color palette has also changed. A familiar Space Gray and Silver colors remained, the saturated Gold was replaced by a paler champagne-ish Starlight, and the darkest option, deep blue Midnight, was also added.

The main change “under the hood” of the 2022 MacBook Air is the transition to a new generation of Apple M2 ARM chips. This is a more powerful 8-core chip with 4 high-performance and 4 power-efficient cores on board. The increase in computing power compared to the previous generation of processors is about 25%.

In addition to the M2 processor, the notebook received a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display, which was expanded closer to the sides and around the camera to free up space for the menu bar. (Although the notch around the camera is still there.) The result is a larger display with a thinner frame. At 500 nits, it is also 25% brighter than before.

Another innovation is the support of fast charging and a new dual-port USB-C charger available. The laptop battery charges to 50% in just 30 minutes.

MagSafe magnetic charging technology is also supported. Battery life is up to 18 hours.

The MacBook Air M2 2022 webcam with FaceTime HD 1080p technology delivers a clear picture. The resolution is doubled compared to its predecessor, which makes the image better even in low light.

Three microphones arranged in a circle provide excellent audibility. With noise reduction technology and voice capture algorithms, you can call or record sound anywhere, even in a noisy street.

Four speakers are built-in for sound reproduction: two high-frequency and two low-frequency. The Spatial Audio system with Dolby Atmos technology creates voluminous, juicy sound. According to Apple, the new MacBook Air surpasses the M1-based Air by 20% in photo processing and 40% in video processing.
